Etymology[edit]

A substantivisation of στοιχάς (stoikhás, in rows one behind another, adjective), in elliptical use for αἱ στοιχάδες [νῆσοι] (hai stoikhádes [nêsoi]), used as a proper noun. Compare Κυκλάδες (Kukládes) and Σποράδες (Sporádes).
