From Phrygian βεκος (bekos), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₃g- (to bake). Cognate with φώγω (phṓgō, roast), Old English bacan (to bake).

      and among peoples the Phrygians, on account, I suppose, of their (word for) bread.
