Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The meanings "arrogance" and "kind of waterbird" are probably not related. If βρίνθος (brínthos, kind of bird) is reliable, the bird name may be Pre-Greek. On the other hand, βρινδεῖν (brindeîn, to be agitated, provoke) is not related.
