Ancient Greek[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably from either Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰe or Proto-Indo-European *ǵe. Possible cognates include Gothic -𐌺 (-k) and Sanskrit हि (hi), (ha) or (gha).

Pronunciation[edit]

Particle[edit]

γε (ge)

  1. Limiting particle: at least, at any rate
  2. Intensifying particle. This is difficult to translate into English, except perhaps with italics or an exclamation mark !.

Usage notes[edit]

Γε generally follows the word it affects, but may follow the word's definite article, or an attached preposition. It may also attach to other particles, with a mild intensifying effect.
