Etymology

According to Lewy, from Aramaic כַּרְבָּלְתָּא (karbaltā, “headgear, a type of head covering; cock's comb, crest”), while Rabin points to it's ancestor Akkadian 𒌆𒋼𒀀𒁀𒀠𒆷𒋫 (TUG kar-ba-al-la-ta /⁠karballatu⁠/, “hat, cowl, pointed cap, linen helm”), generally taken as a foreign term associated with Cimmerians. Lagard thinks that the first syllable could be related to Sanskrit शिरस् (śiras, “head”). Furnée points to Pre-Greek origin, in view of the suffix, while Prellwitz connects the word with κόρυμβος (kórumbos, “peak, summit”) and Meister with κόρθυς (kórthus, “heap”), κόρθιλος (kórthilos, “wren”), κόρυς (kórus, “helmet”) and κορυφή (koruphḗ, “top of the head”).
