Etymology[edit]

Unknown, but probably a Wanderwort related to Proto-Semitic *lapt- (turnip), Sumerian 𒇻𒂠𒊬 (LU-UB₂ŠAR /⁠lub⁠/, turnip). Only attested as a gloss in Hesychius.
