Ancient Greek[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Formation like ἀρτηρία (artēría), from an unattested *λαυκάνη (*laukánē). An aspirated by-form appears in λαυχάνη (laukhánē, tongue; language). Since there are no certain correspondences (Lithuanian liaukà (gland) has been proposed, but does not convince), and as there is a variant with -χ-, Pre-Greek origin is almost certain. The form in λευκ- may be folk-etymological after λευκός (leukós, white), but may also be due to substrate origin.
