Etymology[edit]

From Old East Slavic деревѧнꙑи (derevęnyi), from Proto-Slavic *dervěnъ, from Proto-Indo-European *derwēno- / *derwoyno-, from *deru- (see *dóru). Morphologically *dervo (tree) + *-ěnъ. Equivalent to де́рево (dérevo) +‎ -я́ний (-jányj). Compare Russian деревя́нный (derevjánnyj), Belarusian драўля́ны (draŭljány), Polish drewniany.
