From Proto-Turkic *nēče (how many), from Proto-Turkic *nē- (what) + quantitative affix *-ča/-čä.

Cognate to Karakhanid ناجا (nēčē, how many), Ottoman Turkish نیچه (niçe, how many); Tatar ничә (niçä), Kazakh неше (neşe), Kumyk нече (neçe), Kyrgyz нече (nece), Uzbek necha, Uyghur نەچچە (nechche), Turkmen näçe, Azerbaijani neçə, Turkish nice, Khakas нинӌе (nince), Tuvan чеже (çeje, how many).
