Etymology[edit]
From earlier *istəvtəms, wherein *i- may be from Proto-Uralic *e- (“not”) and *-vto is from Proto-Uralic *-kta-~*-pta- (causative verb suffix). Compare e- in Finnish estää (“to prevent, forestall”) and -hta in Finnish unohtaa (“to forget”).
