Erzya[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From earlier *istəvtəms, wherein *i- may be from Proto-Uralic *e- (not) and *-vto is from Proto-Uralic *-kta-~*-pta- (causative verb suffix). Compare e- in Finnish estää (to prevent, forestall) and -hta in Finnish unohtaa (to forget).

Compare also Moksha юкстамс (jukstams, to forget).
