Erzya[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Mordvinic *säťmə~*śäťmə, wherein *-mə is a suffix (compare dialectal Moksha śäťav). Ultimately onomatopoeic, compare Erzya čať (be quiet!), чатьмонемс (čaťmońems, to be quiet).

First coined by bishop Damaskin in 1785 as сатьме (saťme).
