Perhaps derived from Proto-Turkic *tïgïŕ (narrow, confined).

Cognate with Karachay-Balkar тыгъырыкъ (tığırıq, narrow; a small, mean house; blind alley), Karaim тыгъырык (tïğïrïq, wild animal's lair).
