From Proto-Turkic *tepe (hill, top; top of head). Cognate with Kazakh төбе (töbe), Kyrgyz дөбө (döbö), Crimean Tatar töpe /töbe, Kumyk тёбе (töbe), Azerbaijani təpə, Turkish tepe, Turkmen depe, Tuvan тей (tey), etc.
