Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Mordvinic *šapamə, inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *šappa (sour, acid). Cognates include Moksha шапама (šapama), Finnish hapan (happama-), Estonian hapu and possibly Hungarian savanyú.
