Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Mordvinic *äśkələms, inherited from Proto-Uralic *aśkele (step), itself derived from *aśka- (to step). Cognates include Finnish askel (step), astua (to step, to enter), Western Mari ашкыл (aškyl, step), Komi-Zyrian воськов (vośkov, step).
