Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old East Slavic изгои (izgoi)[1] or изгой (izgoj).[2] By surface analysis, із- (iz-) +‎ го́їти (hójity), from Proto-Slavic *gojiti (to heal, feed), the latter derived from a causative form of Proto-Indo-European *gʷeyh₃- (to live) (whence жи́ти (žýty)).
