Inherited from Proto-Turkic *karïĺ (span); cognate with Kazakh қарыс (qarys), Southern Altai карыш (karïš), Uzbek qarich, Uyghur غېرىچ (ghërich), Khakas харыс (xarıs), Yakut харыс (qarıs, span).
