From *qaqïrïq (phlegm, expectoration from lower airway), from the verbal stem *qaqïr- (to expectorate, cough up mucus).

Cognate with Kazakh қақырық (qaqyryq, phlegm), Kyrgyz какырык (kakırık, phlegm), Southern Altai какырык (kakïrïk, phlegm), Khakas хағырых (xağırıx, phlegm), etc.
