from Arabic أَوْلِيَاء (ʔawliyāʔ), plural of وَلِيّ (waliyy, custodian, protecter, helper).

Cognate with Kazakh әулие (äulie, sacred, holy), Uzbek avliyo (sacred, holy), Kumyk авлия (awliya, mad person, stupid person).
