Etymology[edit]

From *լէզ- (*lēz-, to lick), from Proto-Indo-European *leiǵʰ- (to lick). Ancient Greek λείχω (leíkhō) is the closest cognate. Other cognates include Sanskrit लेढि (leḍhi), Latin lingō, Russian лизать (lizatʹ) and Old English liccian (English lick).
