Etymology[edit]

The root is կիծ- (kic-), of uncertain origin, +‎ -ան- (-an-). Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *geyd- (to stick, jab, tickle) and cognate with English kittle, German kitzeln (to tickle), Icelandic kitla (to tickle). See also Old Armenian կէտ (kēt), Middle Armenian կէտ (kēt, kind of biting fly), Armenian կիճ (kič), ճիճ (čič).
