Etymology[edit]

The original spelling is աւծանեմ (awcanem), from Proto-Armenian *auǵ-, from *Hnʷg- (with regular palatalization of the velar after *u/w as in աւձ (awj)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃n̥gʷ- (with a metathesis of *w as in ածուխ (acux)), from the zero-grade of *h₃engʷ- (to anoint) +‎ -ան- (-an-).
