The original spelling is աւծանեմ (awcanem), from Proto-Indo-European *auǵ-, from *Hnʷg-, from *n̥gʷ-, *h₃ngʷ- (to anoint), +‎ -ան- (-an-). Cognates include Sanskrit अनक्ति (anákti, to anoint), Latin unguo (to anoint), Old High German ancho (German Anke), Old Irish imb.
