Etymology 2[edit]

From Sogdian ʾʾwzyy (*ōwazē) (Manichean), ʾʾwzʾk (*āwaze, *āwāz), possibly from Akkadian 𒍪𒀊 (apsu), Sumerian 𒍪𒀊 (abzu). Possibly related to Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾpzn' /⁠ābzan⁠/), Old Armenian աւազ (awaz, sand), and Arabic حَوْض (ḥawḍ).

      âb-hâê ki ân râ batîha xwânand bisyâr ast valîkan ânča ma'rûf ast nuh batîha ast ... va haftum batîha-i buxârâ, ân râ âvâza-i baykand xwânand, andar bêâbân ast.
