Etymology[edit]
Arabic plural of استحکام (estehkâm), from Arabic اِسْتِحْكَام (istiḥkām, “intensification, becoming fortified”). Probably a calque of French fortification, likely via Ottoman Turkish استحكامات (istihkamat).
