Etymology[edit]

From Arabic الْإِسْكَنْدَرِيَّة (al-ʔIskandariyya), from Byzantine Greek Ἀλεξάνδρεια (Alexándreia), from Ancient Greek Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros, Alexander) + -ειᾰ (-eia, -ia: forming place names) for its founder Alexander the Great. Doublet of اسكندرون.
