From Middle Persian 𐭠𐭭𐭥𐭱𐭪𐭩 (anōšag, immortal), from 𐭥𐭱𐭪𐭩 (anōš) + 𐭪𐭩 (-ag), from Old Persian *anauša- (immortal), from Proto-Iranian *an-auša- (immortal). Akin to Avestan 𐬀𐬥𐬀𐬊𐬱𐬀 (anaoša, immortal), Ossetian ӕнус (ænus), and Old Armenian borrowing անուշակ (anušak).
