Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yïrmak (river) and probably related to یارمق (yarmak, to split, rend, cleave) and یارم (yarım, half); cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (yırmak), Azerbaijani irmaq and Chuvash ҫырма (śyrma).
