From Middle Persian [script needed] (plyp /⁠frēb⁠/, deceit, deception), from Proto-Iranian *fra- (toward, from Proto-Indo-European *pro-) + *dab (to deceive, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰebʰ- (to deceive; to harm)).
