From Proto-Iranian *custáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čutˢtás, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kud-tó-s (propelled), from *(s)kewd- (to shoot, throw). Cognate with Sanskrit चोदति (códati, to impel).
