Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (gwšnk' /⁠gušnag⁠/, hungry), from Proto-Iranian *warš- (to be hungry), an Iranian-specific coinage modeled after Proto-Iranian *tarš- (to be thirsty), the latter from Proto-Indo-European *ters- (dry, thirsty).[1]
