Inherited from Proto-Turkic *küńe (moth); cognate with Azerbaijani güvə, Bashkir көйә (köyə), Chuvash кӗве (kĕve), Kazakh күйе (küie), Southern Altai кӱйе (küye), Turkmen güýe, Uzbek kuya and Yakut көйүүр (köyüür).
