Ultimately from Sanskrit आम् (ām). Compare Standard Hindustani हाँ (hā̃) / ہَاں (hā̃), Old Marathi 𑘮𑘰𑘽 (hāṃ), 𑘮𑘻 (ho), Marathi हो (ho), होय (hoy).
