Etymology

ܐܸܕ (id, “this”) + the absolute state of ܝܵܘܡܵܐ (yāwmā, “day”); compare Turoyo ܐܱܕܝܱܘܡܰܐ (ädyäwma), Classical Syriac ܝܲܘܡܵܢܵܐ (yawmānā, literally “This day”), Arabic اَلْيَوْم (al-yawm), and Hebrew הַיּוֹם (hayóm).
