From the earlier uncontracted form ܓܪܓܪܬܐ (gargartāʾ), from the root ܓ-ܪ (IPA(key): /ɡ-r/) related to dragging or leaking. Compare Arabic حَنْجَرَة (ḥanǧara(t)) and Hebrew גַּרְגֶּרֶת (gargéreṯ).
