ܓܝܒܐ
Assyrian Neo-Aramaic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Phono-semantic matching of Arabic جَيْب (jayb), itself from a semantic evolution of either ܓܰܒܴ݁ܐ (gabbā, “side, flank”), ܓܘܒܐ (gubbā, “cistern”) or Classical Syriac ܓܰܝܒ݁ܳܐ (gaybā, “temple, vaulted chamber”). If from this then from Akkadian 𒁺𒁍 (gub-bu /gubbû/, “reservoir, cistern”), and ultimately from Sumerian 𒀀𒇷𒁀 (a-gub₂-ba /agubbû/, “a basin for lustration water”), Sumerian 𒇷 (gub₂, “to bathe”).

[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unknown, possibly a variant of ܓܒܐ (gabbā, “side, flank”), of ܓܘܒܐ (gubbā, “cistern”), or from Akkadian 𒁺𒁍 (gub-bu /gubbû; agubbû, egubbû/, “reservoir, cistern”), ultimately from Sumerian 𒀀𒇷𒁀 (a-gub₂-ba /agubbû/, “a basin for lustration water”), Sumerian 𒇷 (gub₂, “to bathe”).
