Etymology[edit]

From Aramaic חֵמְּיָנָא (ḥemyānā), variant of חְמָּא (ḥəmā); related to Arabic حَم (ḥam) and Hebrew חָם (khám). The original form is reflected in ܒܲܪܚܡܵܝܵܐ (barḥmāyā, Wife’s brother).
