Etymology[edit]

From ܡܲܓܵܢ (maggān, free of charge, adverb) +‎ -ܝܐ (-āyā, the attributive adjective ending), from Akkadian 𒁹𒈠𒂵𒉡 (im-magāni, literally as a gift); compare also Arabic مَجَّانِيّ (majjāniyy).
