Etymology[edit]

From ܥܘܪܠܐ (ʿurlāʾ, uncircumcised; gentile), from the root ܥ-ܪ-ܠ (IPA(key): /ʕ-r-l/) related to circumcising + the abstract noun ending ܘܬܐ- (-ūṯāʾ). Compare Arabic غُرْلَة (ġurla(t)) and Hebrew עָרְלָה (ʿorlâ).
