Etymology[edit]

Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit पक्षिन् (pakṣín, bird, literally winged). Compare Old Punjabi ਪੰਖੀ (paṅkhī), Old Gujarati पखी (pakhī), पंखी (paṃkhī), Old Marathi 𑘢𑘎𑘿𑘬𑘲 (pakṣī), Bengali পঙ্খী (poṅkhi).
