Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Persian چشمه (čašma, spring, source; spectacles), related to چشم (čašm, eye), itself ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čáćšma (sight). Related to Sanskrit चक्षु (cakṣu). Cognate with Assamese চছমা (sosoma), Gujarati ચશ્માં (caśmā̃), Hindi चश्मा (caśmā), Punjabi ਚਸ਼ਮਾ (caśmā), Marathi चष्मा (caṣmā). Doublet of চোখ (cōkh) and চক্ষু (cokkhu).
