Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Sanskrit ফণা (phaṇā, hood). Traditionally combs are used as ornaments which are driven into buns for fashion; they look like hoods. Cognate with Bengali ফনী (phoni), Rohingya fóuni, óni, hóni, Chakma 𑄛𑄪𑄚𑄨 (puni).
