Inherited from Sanskrit ফিঙ্গক (phiṅgaka), diminutive of *ফিঙ্গ (phiṅga), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pingos (chaffinch). Cognate with Bengali ফিঙে (phiṅe, drongo), Hindi फिंगा (phiṅgā). Compare Ancient Greek σπίγγος (spíngos, chaffinch), Russian пе́нка (pénka, wren), Welsh pinc (finch), German Fink, Old English finċ (English finch).
