Inherited from Early Assamese বাট (baṭo), Magadhi Prakrit *𑀯𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*vaṭṭa), from Sanskrit ৱৰ্ত্মন্ (vártman), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *wártma, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wártma, from Proto-Indo-European *wértmn̥. Cognate with Sylheti ꠛꠣꠐ (baṭ), Braj बाट (bāṭ), Nepali बाटो (bāṭo), Gujarati વાટ (vāṭ).
