Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀫𑀸𑀉𑀲𑀺 (māusi), from Late Prakrit *𑀫𑀸𑀢𑀼𑀲𑁆𑀲𑀺 (*mātussi), from Early Prakrit *𑀫𑀸𑀢𑀼𑀲𑁆𑀲𑀲𑁆𑀲𑀺 (*mātussassi) from Vedic Sanskrit मातुःष्वसृ (mātuḥṣvasṛ, mother’s sister), a compound of मातुः (mā́tuḥ, mother's, genitive of मातृ (mātṛ)) +‎ स्वसृ (svásṛ, sister). Doublet of মাতৃষ্বসা (matriśvośa), a tatsama.
