Inherited from Sanskrit মিষ্ট (miṣṭa), from मृष्ट (mṛṣṭa, “polished”), from the root मृज् (mṛj, “to polish, purify”). Cognate with Bengali মিঠা (miṭha), Hindi मीठा (mīṭhā), Urdu میٹھا (mīṭhā).
