Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Early Assamese মৈৰা (moira), from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀫𑀊𑀮 (*maūla), from Sanskrit মযূৰ (mayūra), borrowed from Proto-Dravidian *mayVr (peacock). Possibly a Wanderwort; compare Santali ᱢᱟᱨᱟᱜ (marak’, peacock) and Proto-Mon-Khmer *mraik (peacock). Doublet of ময়ূৰ (moyur).
