Etymology[edit]

A compound of রাজ (raj) + শাহী (śahi), with both terms meaning "king" but with the former from Sanskrit राज (rāja) and the latter from Classical Persian شاه (šāh); this naming is probably for acknowledging the rule of both the Hindu Rajas and the Muslim Shahs over the city.
