Inherited from Early Assamese শাশু (śaśu), from Sanskrit শ্ৱশ্ৰূ (śvaśrū), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *swaśrúH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swaćrúH, from Proto-Indo-European *sweḱrúh₂ (mother-in-law). Cognate with Sylheti ꠢꠠꠤ (hoṛi), Bengali শাশুড়ি (śaśuṛi), Hindustani ساس (sās) / सास (sās).
