Etymology[edit]

ဂၞဴ (gnau, abdomen, belly) +‎ အာ (ʼā, to go); compare also Burmese ဝမ်းသွား (wam:swa:, to have loose bowels) and Thai ท้องเดิน (tɔ́ɔng-dəən, to have diarrhoea), both of which have the same construction.
