From Proto-Karen *thɔʔᴰ (pig), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *pʷak (pig). Cognate with Pa'o Karen ထော့ꩻ, Eastern Pwo ထေဝ်, Western Pwo ထိၭ, Western Kayah ꤓꤛꤢ (htya).
