From Proto-Karen *thɔʔᴰ (“pig”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *pʷak (“pig”). Cognate with Pa'o Karen ထော့ꩻ, Eastern Pwo ထေဝ်, Western Pwo ထိၭ, Western Kayah ꤓꤛꤢ (htya).
